Letters From The Savior
Last week I was reading a book on self compassion and in the book it talked about having love and compassion towards yourself during times of struggle or trials. This is actually something that can be extremely hard for me. When I am struggling with something, I tend to beat myself up, rather than loving myself and having compassion for myself. In this book, it talked about writing a letter to yourself from the perspective of a friend who is compassionate and loving. A friend who knows your strength, knows your struggles, and loves you for all of them. What would that friend say? How would this friend convey the deep compassion they feel for you, especially for the discomfort you feel when you judge yourself so harshly? What would this friend write in order to remind you that you are only human, that all people have both strengths and weaknesses?
When I first read this, my mind immediately turned to the Savior. What better friend to rely on during hard times than the Savior? The one who knows exactly what you are feeling at any given point. What would He say to you in your darkest moments? This was such an eye opener for me. What would He say to me? I’m not going to lie, it took me a couple days to figure out what He would say. But after much pondering and prayer, I was able to write that compassionate letter to myself through the perspective of the Savior and the experience I had was one I will cherish.
I want to invite you to write this letter for yourself this week. Ask yourself, what would the Savior say to ME during times of struggle? How would the Savior convey the deep compassion He feels for me, especially for the discomfort I feel when I judge myself? What would the Savior write in order to remind me that I am only human, that all people have both strengths and weaknesses? Write that down and then read it often, especially during the hard times. He knows us. He knows you on a deep level. He has been through all the things you have gone through, are going through, or will ever go through. He knows you and wants to help you. Turn to Him. You got this!
2 Corinthians 12:9-10
9 And he said unto me, My grace is sufficient for thee: for my strength is made perfect in weakness. Most gladly therefore will I rather glory in my infirmities, that the power of Christ may rest upon me.
10 Therefore I take pleasure in infirmities, in reproaches, in necessities, in persecutions, in distresses for Christ’s sake: for when I am weak, then am I strong.
