You Are Not Your Feelings

You Are Not Your Feelings

Over Identifying With Feelings

I feel like I am a recovering over identifier when it comes to feeling my feelings. A uncomfortable feeling will come up for me and I instantly identify with it. “I am sad.” Or “I am mad.” I say that like that is who I am. I have found this extremely unhelpful for many reasons, but for me, it makes it almost impossible for me to process the feeling and move on. A lot of times when I am over identifying with feelings I shut down and have a hard time getting out. I spiral and become stuck feeling even more uncomfortable heavy feelings. Can you relate?

I Am vs. Upon Me

This week I found out that in Irish when you talk about emotion, you don’t say, ‘I am sad.’ You’d say, ‘sadness is upon me’- Ta bron orm.’ I love that because there’s in implication of not identifying yourself with the feeling fully. I am not sad, it’s just that sadness is on me for a while. Here’s the thing, when we allow them, feelings can come and go. When we can look at our feelings as simply ‘being on me for a time’ and not ‘I am what I feel’ then we are giving space for the feeling to come and go.

Give It A Try

This week I want to invite you to join me in being more aware of the feelings that are upon us. Allow them to be there and tell yourself, “I am not this feeling. It is simply upon me for a while.” When we are willing to let our feelings be upon us, we really can learn a lot from them. You are not your feelings. You are a human, experiencing human life, and with that comes a lot of feelings. Embrace them and embrace being human. Let whatever feeling that comes up for you be upon you. You got this my friend!

XOXO
